It's all about the fashion

Fashion is not just limited to the clothes that you wear on your back but fashion is seen everywhere. There are many magazines, department stores, and television shows that revolve around fashion.

A good example of how fashion can make a powerful statement is the hit television show that is featured on TLC “What Not To Wear.” At first I really was not into this television show because of how much a person has to go through to become beautiful and to be beautiful in high fashion clothing. I remember the times when my sister really liked this show, and after watching a few episodes of this show I started liking it too.

I started liking the show mainly because of how brave the people were to get an extreme makeover on themselves. Personally, I would not be brave enough to be on that show because I have my own definition of what fashion is. Also, I don’t really like being told what I can wear and what I can’t wear.

We don’t realize this, but not only does fashion revolve around clothing but it also revolves on how we should look. Do you ever notice a lot of the magazines that we see either on news stands or get as a subscription have to do with weight loss? I remember when being in a grocery store not too long ago I saw on a magazine cover Lauren Graham from the television show “Gilmore Girls.” But next to her picture it said, “How she burns over 750 calories a day.”

What really gets to me about magazines that deal with health and weight loss is that I feel as if those types of magazines are telling people what to eat and what they can’t eat. Do you ever notice how celebrities have to keep up with the latest fashions? It’s because they have to maintain a “hot” body to fit into the latest fashions.

Health and fitness have a lot to do with the fashion world because without being fit, how are we supposed to fit into clothes that we want to wear? And even though it may not be possible but sometimes celebrities are being over exaggerated on magazines because of the use of Photoshop. Photoshop can pretty much solve any problem by digital editing on anyone’s face and body.

Throughout this whole fashion talk, even though there are some good and bad things about fashion, it will always be a part of us.

It’s crazy to see how much fashion has changed over the years and how much we care about how we look. It’s not all about just throwing an outfit together and heading out the door. When choosing fashion we pay attention to specifics like color, sense of fashion, accessories, and etc.

It’s also not about being simple with fashion. What we wear, we have to accessorize it right. In my opinion, fashion is a lot like a Barbie Doll. The way we dress a Barbie Doll is how we want to look in real life. Whether if it is true or not, we all want to look good for someone or for at least ourselves.

Sometimes in the world of fashion we become overwhelmed with fashion. It surprises me everyday that a new fashion trend is emerging and growing. Do you remember how skinny jeans were never really in style to begin with? And what about leggings? The clothes that were in style in the early 60s and 70s are starting to come back but with a stylish twist to it. Fashion will never be the same.

Amy Sohn and her life

This female writer was known to have many accomplishments. Not only was she a columnist, but she was also a novelist, a Screenwriter, Author, and Editor in Chief. For those who are not familiar with Amy Sohn’s book that came out in September 2009 titled Prospect Park West which was made by Simon & Schuster. There was another version of the book that was also made in paperback which was brought out in 2010 that was associated with Downtown Books.

Sohn was raised and grew up in Brooklyn, NY. She comes from a small family with just having one older brother. During Barack Obama’s election, she voted for him and decided to raise money for him. Before becoming a writer, her favorite writers consisted of Laurie Colwin, Hilma Wolitzer, Charles Bukowski, Nathanael West, Susan Minot, Mary Gaitskill, and Bruce Jay Friedman. Her favorite movies were Gregory’s Girl, The Landlord, and Together. Throughout her life, her parents wanted to raise her in a certain way that would be presented.

As strange as it sounds, if she weren’t a columnist, she would rather be a star on Broadway. Sohn loves to dress up and she believes that a bargain can get you anywhere. She does believe that she could be successful as a writer and as a star on Broadway but will settle for the career that she has had for a long time.

Sohn still also believed in funny punchlines and funny jokes. Her favorite joke is known to be, “What’s the difference between a Jew and a Gentile? A Gentile leaves without saying goodbye and a Jew says goodbye without leaving.” (http://www.amysohn.com/?page_id=27).

In her early life Sohn graduated from Brown University as an Honors student and was also selected to run in the sorority society “Phi Beta Kappa Society.” Before she became interested in becoming a writer she started out in 1996 with a dating column titled “Female Trouble,” which was featured in New York Press, which her writings received negative and critical reviews from those who found her writings to be bitter and something that should not have been read.

Even though her column previously received negative reviews from readers, she still followed her passions and continued on with her writings. She followed her own instinct at the New York Press with another column titled “Amy Sohn on THERsdays” where she comprared two people, Mayor Giuliani to Hitler but also incorporating the Yankees locker room. As strange as it sounded, she wanted to make a powerful statement to the world.

While working on her columns, Sohn was able to publish her first novel Run Catch Kiss, and that was also made by Simon & Schuster back in 1999. In 2000, Amy was featured in a television show that was featured on Oxygen’s “X Chromosome” which was an animated series called “Avenue Amy.”

In August 2001, Sohn received a job at the New York Magazine, where she worked there as an editor for six years. Most of her columns reflected what she went through in her early life and some of the life changing things that had happened to her. As her columns slowly started to fly away and to disappear, she believed for a second that her life would end up in the same situation. But thankfully her life did not stop.

On her way to becoming successful Sohn publishes her second book in September 2004 called Old Man. Her books had a huge advantage because it not only came in one language but it also came in several different languages for everyone to read.

Along with her writings, Sohn wrote two films called Spin the Bottle and a Gen X horror movie called Pagans.

You must wear this!

There is something that this entire world can not escape from. They can not escape from fashion. Whether it is figuring out what to wear for the day or finding out what the latest trends are, it is something that is clearly going to remain with us until we die.

My earliest memories of when fashion played a big role in my life was when I was selected to take a fashion design course my junior year of high school.  I was in the beginning fashion design class so it took a little while until we were able to start making clothing. A big part of the class was to look at fashion magazines, such as “Vogue.”

It was a bit overwhelming to see how their definition of fashion was the opposite of what I thought. Just by glancing on each and every page of that fashion magazine, I was amazed by how detailed their clothes were and how fancy the models were presented.

Another example of fashion is the popular television show, America’s Next Top Model.” It is a show about women competing against one another for the spot to be the number one model. America’s Next Top Model” demonstrates that women are only seen wearing the top clothing brands that are in style today, but they wear it to demonstrate on how it can be considered as high fashion. The main theme of the show is presenting high fashion in hair, makeup, and a particular clothing line.

Like the internet, fashion is something that is changing on an everyday basis. Do you remember how certain clothing styles were only in fashion back in the 80s? They are now coming back into fashion today. Even clothing that was never in style to begin with is now coming back. What you wear does make a fashion statement. It’s funny to see how when someone starts a fashion trend, a lot of people tend to follow that trend.

Fashion has a large affect on how on how we as individuals act in society. It’s easy to be able to identify where we shop, just by looking at what we wear. It can also create a stereotype for example, just because a guy wears a band t-shirt and skinny jeans does not mean that person is not social or is “emo,” and just because a girl only wears brightly colored clothing does not mean that person is “preppy.” Fashion should not define how a person will act. Fashion only defines what a person likes.

Everywhere you look, even in big department stores such as Macys is seen mostly featuring clothing that is in style today. Other department stores such as Ross and Marshalls offer the same thing. Ross and Marshalls targets those who like to be in fashion but do not like to spend a lot of money. Because why should fashion break the bank? Fashion should be affordable for any age and for any person.

The good thing about fashion is that it lets individuals express themselves in a freeing way. Fashion is something that will never go away. As time passes on, new fashions are just arriving. For every season, there is a fashion statement that goes with it. It is amazing to see how not only fashion lies within us as a society but it also lies in cultures, food, and on television.

Fashion can have a good affect or a bad affect on the lives of people. We are constantly getting different ideas as to what is considered to be in fashion today. Fashion is still somewhat fuzzy and blurry to me just because there isn’t a clear definition as to what fashion really is.

Stay in School

Education is probably considered to be the most important thing in a person’s life. Getting an education allows people to stay in school and to learn useful things that can be applied later in life. But often times, even when we are receiving a good education, sometimes we forget why we are even in school. But we should really answer this question, “What’s good about going to College?”

You may think it’s silly to be answering this question, but sometimes it’s necessary to answer that type of question. What’s good about going to College and receiving a College education is that it allows young adults to expand and to continue their education in the field that they want to study. For some of us who are undecided on what to major in, it allows them to explore the different career options and find what interests them. What’s also good about going to College is that it gives young adults a glimpse on how different the environment is, compared to being in High School. College prepares young adults as to what it will be like in the real world.

Once you’re in College, you’re no longer a child. You are an adult and you are also responsible for yourself. You are in charge of your own path. College allows young adults to network with other people to find out their own interests, hobbies, and what they are studying in school. I know I was nervous about starting school at Sacramento State because honestly I did not know what to expect. Coming from the Bay Area and moving to Sacramento for school was a bit stressful at first, but then I was used to the environment after the first few weeks. My first impression about Sacramento State’s campus was that there are a lot of different clubs and organizations that the students can join and the people are very friendly and diverse.

Even though I do not work at the moment I am very glad that I am going to College. Not to offend anyone but, back in my hometown you’re either working a dead end job or you’re going to a Community College with no specific educational path. A lot of young adults in my hometown who are working the dead end jobs do wish that they were still in school. Because of the costs of being in College, most of them have to work in order to make a living. I would rather be broke and going into debt for my education, rather than go into debt because of something else. It was very common that young college students go into debt for their education by taking out several loans and taking several years to pay them off.

College gives young adults the opportunity to take the classes that they need and it also lets them create an ideal schedule that is best fitting for them. I really like how College gives me the freedom to not take classes every single day. College lets me be independent and it also lets me take control of my own education. When dealing with the everyday stressful situations of a College student, it is nice that they offer the counseling and resources so it eases the stress off a bit.

By going to College and later on earning a College degree, it allows young adults to earn a little bit more money than those with only a High School Diploma. Having a College degree puts those at advantage if they want to pursue in a higher paying job. With a High School Diploma, it limits options as to where people can work and it is more likely that their pay will not be as good as someone with a higher degree. I guess through this whole “College talk” it’s important for young adults to take control of their own lives.

New Year, New Semester

The last day of summer ends and then the first week of school officially begins. The ending of summer meant moving back to Sacramento from the Bay Area and starting a new semester and seeing new faces. I honestly did not know what to expect from the first week of school. I admit that I had a nervous gut feeling about starting a new semester because it meant meeting new people, meeting new professors, and learning about the different classes that I am taking. Every start to a new semester seemed to be predictable because it was the same routine over and over again, but the start to this semester had a slight change to it. It was a change that I did not expect.

So when the first week of classes rolled around, I was expecting to just get a boring syllabus and a boring lecture about the introduction to the different classes that I am taking. There was a different twist to my first week of classes. Normally I am really bored with the first week of classes because of the fact that nothing really gets done the first week of school. All professors do is hand out a syllabus, talk about the introduction to a course, and then end the class early. Normally people would feel really happy about getting out of classes early on the first week of school, but for some reason I was not happy, only because I actually wanted to learn something useful the first week of school.

A change that has happened throughout the first week of school was that some of my professors were serious about getting to work and surprisingly some of my professors actually lectured the first day. Call me a nerd, but I actually do like it when professors lecture material the first day of classes. First of all, it gives me something to study when I get home and it allows me to learn something new and useful. I am not trying to bash on the professors who only just give out the syllabus and let their classes out early, but it really does catch my attention when I see that professors are serious about their work and what they are teaching. It gives me a glimpse as to what I will be studying throughout the semester and it will also help me set up goals for myself to achieve. I believe that it is good for people to set up goals for themselves and to stay organized. I am a big believer on being organized and it makes life a whole lot easier.

Throughout this whole talk about school and changes to the first week of classes, it seems as if people are changing as well. When it comes to being in College it is really important to know what you want to study and what sort of jobs will be available in the real world. After just being in Sacramento for two years it amazes me to see that students are taking school seriously. Change is a good thing for College students and by seeing college students grow up and mature, it gives hope that anyone can accomplish big things in life. Even though there is a lot of stress with being in College and with the expenses that comes along with it, it is probably better living to be in school than to be working dead end jobs.

Time is of the essence and time is constantly changing. Our lives are currently changing day by day and we never know what will happen. Life is short and school should never be turned away. Education is something that will never die. Without education, I do not think it would be possible for people to even live. It is something that surrounds us constantly and education motivates us to do well in our own everyday lives.
